The LM317 is a adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage regulator capable of supplying in excess of 1.5A over a voltage range of 1.2V to 37V. The IC chip also contains full overload protection such as current limit and thermal overload protection.

The 1uF capacitor is included to improve transient response. Ouput capacitors of up to 100uF are commonly used to provide improved output impedance and rejection of transients.
